    Affenpinscher

    Affenpinscher

Speaking of lesser known breeds, the Affenpinscher is right up (or “down there?”) on the list.

The Affenpinscher is a dog known for its terrier-like hunting skills and for being quite athletic, despite its small size.

Many people love “Affens,” quite frankly, because they can look like little monkeys, complete with a wide range of facial experessions.

Affens love people, and love being part of a family. They will want to be in the middle of every family activity, and to deny them the opportunity borders on being cruel as far as Affenpinschers go.

The Affenpinscher is very playful, and will keep you amused for hours with the things it finds to do. This breed is also very intelligent, as well as very protective of its loved ones.

Although good family dogs, Affens are better with older childen than with younger ones. Especially, Affenpinschers tend to be quite territorial about their food and possessions, and children need to understand this and be respectful of the dog’s “property.”

    Otterhound on a postage stamp

    Otterhound on a postage stamp

ne of the lesser known dog breeds is the otterhound.

This is is a rather large dog, muscular, with a shaggy face. Colors are in the black and tan range usually, but some are are rather lighter — like the otterhound on this postage stamp.

Otterhounds make good watch dogs, but with family and acquaintances — including children — they are usually quite gentle.

As you might guess from the name, otterhounds love the water and maneuver well in it. In fact, they have feet that are slightly webbed, which aids them in swimming.

It takes a good deal of patience to train an otterhound, but this breed is very loyal to its owner and will return much love and obedience in return for your efforts.

One thing to be aware of is the otterhound’s extreme tendency to chase things. You will have to work extra hard on getting your otterhound not to chase the neighbor’s cat or any smaller dogs in your household.

As you might guess, people with otterhounds love their dogs, thinking them somewhat special for not being as well known as many o9ther breeds. Some of them go so far as to buy or create t-shirts, mugs and other items proclaiming their love for otterhounds. One of the best selections of such items may be seen here:
